The Vehicle Communication Module (VCM) is a high performance, ruggedized, vehicle serial communications gateway. This device provides multiple vehicle serial communication interfaces to meet the requirements of all Ford Motor Company vehicles.

The VCM unit is housed in a magnesium enclosure with a tough, protective, plastic cover for the PCMCIA expansion slot which can, for example, be used for wireless LAN cards or memory expansion.

Application Overview 

Integrated Diagnostic Software (IDS) is the next generation diagnostic tool. IDS integrates WDS software modified to run on an off-the-shelf laptop with the Vehicle Communication Module (VCM) currently used in NGS+ and PDS, and a new Vehicle Measurement Module (VMM). 

Vehicle Diagnostic Connectors 

The VCM 16-pin DLC cable is used to connect the VCM to the vehicle. The VCM and VMM connect to the laptop through the Ethernet-USB Adapter Cable (H406/H416).

On vehicle models from the E65 on, BMW is for the first time using fibre-optic cables as standard for communication between control units.
The optical buses are notable for their high data transmission rate and they are not susceptible to electromagnetic interference. The optical buses in question are the most bus, primarily used for in-car entertainment electronics, and the byteflight bus, which serves predominantly safety-critical functions.

OPS is intended for rapid programming of control units.
When operated at the SSS, no diagnostic or technical measuring pro-cedures are possible, as no measuring technology is incorporated; in this instance, OPPS / OPS is used predominantly for programming control units (flashing). Communication with the vehicle can be performed both via the MOST and via the OBD interface. The OBD interface is required for the power supply to the OPPS / OPS and has communication properties via which the vehicle can be identified and the data to be programmed can be determined. From CIP version 7.0, it is possible to delete fault code memories via OPPS / OPS.

OPPS has been designed for encoding, individualising and programming (CIP) via the Software Service Station (SSS) and envisaged for use as part of the BMW diagnostic system (DIS) from DISPlus and Group Tester One (GT1). It is intended for testing and programming tasks from the E65 series, taking the place of the diagnostic head.

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., has developed the  “CONSULT-III,” a handheld diagnostic tester for various in-vehicle electronic systems, with the aim of realizing swift and accurate diagnosis and repairs at Nissan dealerships worldwide. The diagnostic tester will be introduced at Nissan dealerships in Japan and other global markets. The roll-out of the new system will coincide with the introduction of the Skyline sedan in Japan this month, and global markets where the Infiniti G35 will be sold, followed progressively by all other remaining markets as new generation products are introduced.
The accurate and speedy diagnosis of a vehicle’s problem has become increasingly complicated as more sophisticated electronic hardware is fitted in vehicles, combined with a significant increase in the number of computers connected to the Controller Area Network (CAN). In the past five-year period, the number of computer systems fitted in today’s vehicles has doubled from only approximately eight in 2001. The CONSULT-III is specifically designed to address these complex and advanced in-vehicle electronic devices, enabling accurate diagnosis and repairs and shortening waiting times for customers.
The basic diagnostic system is composed of the main unit i.e. an extra-durable and rugged laptop PC, a wireless vehicle communication interface and wireless measurement interface; the laptop PC and each interface is connected via Bluetooth technology. Through a wireless LAN, this diagnostic system can be connected to the Nissan network in Japan, enabling the dealerships to retrieve information from various sources and display service technology data on the laptop PC.

The selection of CAN type as well as the identification of malfunction locations are completely automated, allowing CAN diagnosis to be done 17 times faster than previous method where the diagnostics system needed to be supplemented by the service manuals. A personal computer (PC) is connected to the MUT-3 unit and used as a system’s control terminal, and communicates with a vehicle ECU through the V.C.I.. In addition to being able to handle all diagnosis functions covered by the conventional MUT-2 tester, the MUT-3 system can display data as easy-to-understand diagrams and graphs on a large screen of the PC. Unlike the MUT-II, the MUT-3 can retain data on all vehicles, from old to new models, classified according to destination in the PC’s hard disk. This eliminates the awkward but essential job with the MUT-2, of switching the data list (communications protocol data and diagnosis item list database) by replacing the ROM pack with another according to the vehicle model and year model.
New functions that make use of the advantages of the PC are also being developed. For example, the workshop manual viewer is a useful function for mechanics as they no longer have to carry around a thick manual and search for relevant pages while working on a vehicle. OEM J2534 Reflashing Applications
Servicing newer, more increasingly complicated vehicles has put independent repair shops at a disadvantage against auto dealerships that have access to the latest service tools and knowledge databases. Accurately diagnosing and repairing many of these newer vehicles used to require full access to expensive factory service tools. The EPA recognized the independent repair shop’s need for access and mandated that all OEMs comply with the SAE standard J2534-1. The SAE J2534-1 standard defines a uniform hardware device, like the ALLSCANNER® VCX®, CarDAQ-Plus, ScanDAQ and some of the Mongoose versions that all automakers must support with their vehicle reflashing applications.
 
Having access to SAE J2534-1 software and tools are important for several reasons. First, diagnosing and repairing vehicles often requires reprogramming or reflashing the vehicle with the latest update. After a vehicle is assembled and sold at a new car dealership, the automaker’s engineering groups often fix common problems found at the dealership by releasing a new reflash. The reflash is not a recall, and therefore most vehicles on the road will not get the update unless they are brought in to the dealership for servicing. These reflashes could fix transmission shifting problems, hesitation, rough idle, drivability, check engine lights, emissions quality, poor performance, or any of a number of other problems. Without the reflashing capabilities, independent repair shops may spend time and money trying to repair an issue with hard parts that cannot be repaired without a calibration flash update.
 
The Second reason a repair shop should have a SAE J2534-1 device is to offer their customers flash updates as an up sell. Even if the customer does not believe they are experiencing a problem with their vehicle, they may see some benefit in performance, drivability, or even fuel economy by getting their vehicle updated to the latest available calibration flash. It also serves as good preventative maintenance to update the calibration flash and avoid any problems that it was intended to fix.

Description: 

DiCE--Diagnostic Communication Equipment, is a tool that is used together with VIDA all-in-one to communicate with the vehicle. Communication makes diagnosing and troubleshooting the vehicle possible, as well as downloading software.
 
Dice has an integrated CARB cable, which is connected to the vehicle’s diagnostic socket. When coonecting to the vehicle, DiCE is powered as long as the battery is charged.
 
DiCE has a folding hook that is designed for hanging the unit from one of the grab handles in the vehicle for example.
 
DiCE is equipped with four status LEDs that indicate the status of the software, the USB and Bluetooth communication and the interface to the car.

An example:
a customer wants an additional key adapted to his car.
The normal diagnostic procedure requires that all adapted keys are available.
Unfortunately your customer brought only one key along.
At this point you have to send your customer away (and with him his money ...)
Not with VAGdashCAN.
You can add a key to the existing ones without erasing them. You start the procedure with the new key and after some seconds it is adapted to the car.
You don't have to wait 5 minutes for the adaptation channels to become reachable.
Another example:
A customer wants to change his instrument cluster. Normally this is procedure with a lot "ifs and buts".
Not with VAGdashCAN, because you are beyond standard diagnostic procedures!
Just read out the origin immobiliser block and store it. Then you change the instrument cluster and write the origin immobiliser block into the new cluster. That's it.
No further adaptations are necessary.

You don't have to care for immobiliser type classes

Operations of key programmer:

Dismantle the engine ECU from the vehicle (or IMMO) , and take down the IC chip identified as "93C56" (fixed to the computer in the vehicle engine; for the Camry being IC601, and Lexus being IC900. Identification number for a chip fixed to IMMO is 93LC66) . Clean up every pin of IC to make sure of a sound connection.

Install 93C56 on the device through programmer; make sure that the connection is good.
Supply electricity to the programmer, the screen will show"can work normal"with a beep sound indicating that the machine is working well.
Press"R-key", and the red light"LED" will be lit; programmer is thus ready for programming.

Put the key on the key logo of the programmer.
Press R-key again to hear the beep sound beep 4 times, and the red light also goes off, these means that the key has been successfully programming to the programmer. If the beep sound is not made 4 times, then repeat the operation until you hear the exact 4 beep sound.
By the stated operations you can programming 3 keys to the programmer altogether.

Now you can verify whether the 3 keys have been actually programmed: press R-key, put a key near the key logo, if a 4-beep sound is made, that means the programming is effective. Every key must be verified so that they can be program to 93LC56 and 93LC66.
Press Pr-A, Pr-B and Pr-C orderly to programming the 3 programmed keys to 93C56 (or 93LC66) . When "OK" displays, the programming succeeds; otherwise"ERROR" signal appears. Failure may be due to misconnection between 93C56 and the programmer, or the reverse installation or corruption of the chip. In this case you better repeat the adaptation twice to ensure the success.

Now that IC-93C56 (or 93LC66) has three keys programed to it, you can now weld it to the engine ECU. Make sure the weld is good.
Fit the ECU back to the vehicle. With any of the previously programmed keys you can start the vehicle now.

DTC Monitor
DTC Read/Clear is part of the DTC Monitor Tool which allows the user to do the following.
• View all previous sessions of DTC Monitor
• Print the current list of DTC's or freeze data
• Select the freeze data option allowing the user a view of parameter states at the point the most significant fault occurred
• Clear the DTC's
• Read readiness codes (if available)
• Get OBD Status (if available)
• Get Help
• Tool Exit
Figure 1 shows the existing DTC's currently logged on the vehicle. The data is read every 3 seconds to ensure the DTC display is accurate.
Figure 2 shows the start of the DTC clear routine.

Datalist
The Datalist tool has the following options available.
• System Help (help on the tool)
• Parameter Help
• Printing
• Storing and recalling view configuration
• Signal selection
Datalist is a live view of all signals available for the currently selected system; the displayed list is continuously updated.
Datalist has configurable views giving a list, Line or bar graph view. Figure 3 and 4 shows how to select signals for bar graph or line display. Examples of the data formats can be seen by selecting Data Formats.
Datalist allows for the saving of configured views.
Datalist allows the displayed units to be changed i.e. km/h to mph or lbs to Kg etc.
Help is available on the whole of the Datalist tool and on each displayed signal. See Datalist Figure 5 for help example

Data Formats
The data can be displayed in differing formats e.g.List, Bar Graph and Line display.
The signals can be displayed as different units e.g. km/h mph etc.
View Figure 6:- Is an example of the full list display, note the scroll bar allows the user to scroll through the list allowing the full range of signals to be viewed.
View Figure 7:- Is an example of the bar graph display, again there is a scroll bar to allow the user to view all available signals.
View Figure 8:- Is an example of the line display.
Note that by selecting the icons available on the right of the display it is very easy to switch between the available views.
The units displayed for each parameter can be changed, allowing a user to select units they are more familiar with.
Refer to Figures 9 and 10 for the different unit displays. Note the units' column shows the newly selected units in Figure 10. Note also the Values column has now changed to reflect the new unit values.
Figure 11 shows the pressure unit has been selected and that a drop down list of alternative units is presented.

Functional Tests
The functional test menu will display all tests available for the selected system.
Figure 12 shows an example of a functional test in progress.

DLC Locator
The DLC Locator is a quick guide to the location of the Diagnostic connector. Simply select the Vehicle and model year of the vehicle to be diagnosed and the DLC Locator displays a picture with a circle showing the approximate position of the diagnostic connector.
